In ten days, Turkish Airlines will fly a cargo plane of necessary food and water into famine-stricken Somalia. A number of celebrities including Ben Stiller and Snapchat star Jerome Jarre are behind the big move that is set to save thousands of lives.
A campaign dubbed Love Army for Somalia was launched just 10 hours ago and has already made it half way to the $1 million goal with the help of some big names including Wilson Chandler, Colin Kaepernick and Gabriel Conte. Every cent will go towards buying 60 tonnes of food and water for the region which has been in famine for half a decade.
But it begs the question, why is this the first time this is happening? Think of how many lives could be saved if each major airline or shipping company supplied just one trip a year to move food, medical supplies or even people, to help them survive.
Logistically, it will be interesting to see how the whole process plays out but we are excited for what it means for the future of humanitarianism. Especially in a world were countries are choosing to take a focus away from helping other nations.
